How to anchor a canopy tent so it stays put
A canopy acts like a sail. Even a light gust can lift an unanchored tent, which is dangerous for you and the people around you. Anchoring is not optional at outdoor events.
Weights
Add a weight to every leg. A commonly used guideline is roughly 25–40 lb per leg for a 10×10 tent, and more if you add sidewalls or a back wall, because walls catch much more wind. Sandbags, water weights and cast weights all work; hang them low on the leg, not on the roof.
Stakes
On grass or soil, stakes and guy ropes add holding power. Where you cannot drive stakes (asphalt, concrete), rely on weights. Always follow the event's rules about stakes and ground access.
Reduce wind catch
Open the roof vent if your tent has one, lift or remove sidewalls in gusty conditions, and set the tent with its back to the prevailing wind.
Know when to take it down
Pop-up canopies are made for light wind. If gusts pick up, lower or take down the tent early. No weight makes a canopy safe in strong wind.
